Crispy Brussel Sprouts Recipe

Begin this crispy Brussel sprouts recipe with fresh Brussel sprouts. Fresh Brussel sprouts are easy to find in your local grocery store. You can add them to your pick up order at Whole Foods through Amazon.

These Brussels sprouts at Whole Foods are trimmed but still need to have their ends cut. You can halve or quarter them depending their size.

You can find fresh Brussel sprouts by the bag at Aldi as well. Aldi also participates with Instacart, so you don’t even have to go in the store. Just pick up your order curbside and you’re good to go!

Easy Roasted Brussel Sprouts Recipe

One thing about fresh Brussels sprouts are they are SUPER EASY to grow! Harness your inner Michelle Obama and start a garden! This year is my first attempt at growing Brussels sprouts. I cannot impart this enough, it was SO EASY. I planted the seedling and walked away. That’s it. Now we have fresh brussels sprouts in our backyard for FREE! You can’t beat that price!

Brussels sprouts are a cool weather plant which works well if you are looking for a fall harvest. Or, if you live somewhere that is cold 75 percent of the year like we do.

You can buy a Brussel sprout plant like the one below and get it delivered straight to your door. Or, you can also find Brussel Sprout baby plants ready to be planted at Home Depot.

Grilled Roasted Brussel Sprouts Recipe

This recipe is all the grill. No pan, no clean up! Just wash and cut the Brussels sprouts up and place them on aluminum foil with some olive oil, salt, and ground pepper. Add the sliced onion and diced peach. The foil goes directly onto the grill, making clean up as easy as folding and tossing the foil into your recycling or trash can.

Savory Oven Roasted Brussel Sprouts

Instead of using the grill, you can also do your sweet roasted Brussels sprouts recipe in the oven. Same steps, except the foil goes on a baking sheet instead of directly onto the grill.

Caramelize Brussel sprouts with olive oil, salt, and pepper. Add more flavor and plant points with the thinly sliced onion. Add natural sweetness with the peach! Toss your vegetable medley with your Brussels sprouts on the baking sheet before placing them in the oven.

Crispy Air Fryer Roasted Brussel Sprouts

If you love crispy roasted vegetables, you can use your air fryer instead of roasting the Brussel sprouts on the grill or in the oven! This is also a good option if you don’t have enough room on the grill. Or, if you live where it’s cold A LOT OF THE TIME, like me, in the winter.

Air Fried Brussel sprouts entail the same directions if you have an oven with the air fry mode. Just air fry at 425 degrees Fahrenheit for 15 minutes. Or, if you have an air fryer, place the Brussels, onion, and peach in the basket after being tossed with olive oil, salt, and pepper, and air fry for 15 minutes.

Gut Health Secret

Did you know that eating 1 1/2 tablespoons a day of extra virgin olive oil a day can slow your brain’s biological aging? So, coat your Brussel sprouts in plenty of it!

Gut Healthy Roasted Brussel Sprouts

Brussel sprouts are full of fiber, vitamin K, vitamin C and antioxidants. If you’ve read any of my other gut health posts you probably know now that antioxidants are very important for our bodies. They keep away the dreaded inflammation which is associated with chronic diseases, heart disease, and cancer.

Are you at risk for osteoporosis? There are so many risk factors for low bone density. If you are a white, European descent female, the answer is yes. Have you taken birth control? You’re probably at risk too. Brussel sprouts are an excellent source of vitamin K which has been found to protect against osteoporosis (Link, 2022). In fact, one half cup of cooked Brussel sprouts contains 91% of your daily dose of vitamin K!

The Best Roasted Brussel Sprouts Recipe | Bring on the Peaches!

Let’s take a look at the sweet in this sweet roasted Brussel sprouts recipe. Enter peaches. Peaches are SO old, they are almost prehistoric. Peaches are a gut healthy food offering plenty of fiber, antioxidants, and micro superheroes including magnesium and iron. Apparently our ancestors knew a thing or two about peaches nutrition!

Peaches Health Benefits

  • Packed with antioxidants helping you fight aging and chronic disease
  • Plenty of fiber supporting your digestion
  • Contain polyphenols specifically found to reduce the risk of breast cancer

Peaches Benefits | A Gut Healthy Food

Buy fresh ingredients, chop, and devour. As an added benefit, peaches are excellent for your gut health. Why? Peaches are full of fiber and antioxidants which help your digestion, skin, and immune system.

Peaches Nutrition, Antioxidants, and Anti-Aging

Peaches are full of antioxidants a strong preventative against aging. Antioxidants protect your body from damage and disease. What’s more, the riper peaches are, the more antioxidants they provide when eaten (Dabbou et al., 2017).

[Peach] pulp extract was characterized by the highest total phytonutrients content...Overall, the obtained results suggest that [peaches] display a good antioxidant activity and its consumption could be promoted (Loizzo et al., 2015).

That's scientist talk for, eat your damn peaches.

Peaches Nutritional Value

Peaches (and some other fruits) have been found to significantly reduce your body’s production of free radicals. Free radicals are the bad guys which wreak havoc on our health and relate to chronic disease.

In fact, in one small clinical study, 10 men were tested pre and post drinking peach juice (literally juiced peaches, not the stuff from the store). They found positive changes in men’s plasma within only 30 minutes of drinking the juice. Doctors concluded that the peaches “may reduce damage from oxidative stress” (Ko et al., 2005).

Peaches Calories are Low Which Means You Can Have More Than One!

A low calorie snack, peaches contain plenty of fiber too! Within each peach is both insoluble and soluble fiber (Mikstas, 2020). What the heck is the difference between soluble and insoluble fiber? Well, the insoluble fiber helps you digest your food and reduces the risk of constipation (Yang et al., 2012). Meanwhile, the soluble fiber supports those healthy micro superheroes that are so important for our gut health.

Insoluble fiber helped you digest food and reduces your risk for constipation!

Yang et al., 2012

So, in this case, peaches’ soluble fiber supports the development of short chain fatty acids. This is important because short chain fatty acids are shown to help keep inflammation and other chronic conditions in your gut at bay (Macfarlane et al, 2006Sheppach et al., 1992).

The Antioxidants in Peaches May Reduce Risk for Some Cancers

The antioxidants within peaches include polyphenols, carotenoids, and caffeic acid. You can find some of these antioxidants listed above under Gut Healthy Micro Superheroes Featured in Peaches. Doctors have found all three of these antioxidants to prevent growth of cancer cells in test tube studies (Prasad et al., 2011Khachik et al., 1995; . But, what happens in people?

In one study of nearly 76,000 post-menopausal women, doctors found that those who ate at least 2 peaches a day had a 41% lower risk of risk of breast cancer over the two plus decades in which they were followed.

Fung et al., 2014

Again, the take away here is, peaches are a gut healthy super fruit with diverse health benefits.

Pro Tip

Peaches will last about a week on your counter. You can also keep them in the refrigerator to prevent them ripening.
The riper the peach, the more antioxidants within it.

Fresh peaches have more healthy micro superheroes, including fiber, and vitamins, as compared to canned peaches. So, try to buy peaches fresh when you can! You can read more on peaches in Peaches Nutrition Our Ancestors Would Love!
