Vouvray, A Good White Wine that Needs to be On Your Radar
Domaine Vigneau-Chevreau’s 2016 Vouvray Sec is an ideal start to the world of Vouvray and a fantastic experience with Chenin Blanc varietal. The gorgeous golden robe and captivating bouquet that combine the scents of acacia flower, pineapple, and quince are truly tempting. Don’t miss out!
A Little History on Vouvray
The origins of French wine can be traced back to the Roman occupation in Vouvray. When you know, you know. That seems to be what Saint Martin though in 372 A.D. when he founded the abbey of Marmoutier deep in wine country. Popular legends suggest that Saint Martin even planted a vine on the hillside overlooking the Loire.
Vouvray has Holy Origins
By the 8th century, Vobridius (Vouvray) and Vosnes (Rochecorbon) wines were so renowned that monasteries and cathedral chapters competed to acquire them. In fact, throughout the Middle Ages, monks placed a lot of importance on cultivating grapes.
Fast forward 600 years, and the region of Vouvray was known for its fine vineyards. Some vineyards were even owned by kings! They kept the best harvests exclusively for themselves and their royal table.
The Dutch Wanted In On Vouvray
Vouvray was so good that after awhile, the secret started to spread across continental Europe. In fact, the Dutch were really taken with Vouvray wines. This led to the development of a large commercial exchange market in Flanders, which flourished until the 19th century when exchange expanded on a national level.
Vouvray has become one of France’s top wines and is now enjoyed globally! Its total production is 120,000 hectoliters, with the appellation spread over 2100 hectares.
There are different types of Vouvray. Some with bubbles, some without. Some sweet, others dry. The bottle pictured here is a dry white wine.
Domaine Vigneau-Chevreau’s 2016 Vouvray Sec contains very little residual sugar making it a dry wine. The growers suggest to pair this bottle of Vouvray with fish like Air Fry Salmon. Or, try a delicious Asian stir fry pairing like my Asian Chicken Noodle Recipe, or even Southwest foods like pineapple fish tacos!
Where to Find Vouvray
You can find Vouvray at your local wine shop including Dusty’s or Vine and Brew, or check out Whole Foods, which is where I picked up this bottle.
Barbera D’Asti is a Good Red Wine for Your Dinner Table
Piemonte is undeniably one of the best wine regions in Italy. It’s home to the renowned Barolo and Barbaresco, even though they account for just 3% of all wines produced in the region.
This wonderful wine offers a unique, elegant experience – it transports you with its fruity aromas of cherries and plums along with the inviting warmth of smoky spiced oak barrels. Its deep ruby red color with purple highlights completes the perfect picture!
Where to Find Barbera D’Asti
You can find this favorite red wine at your local wine shop for about $13 a bottle. Or, stay home and have it delivered to your door by Drizly!
San Marzano Edda Surprises in the Chardonnay Group
Edda is the spirit of San Marzano, a distinctively feminine and sensual white wine that has an exceptionally complex flavor profile with hints of the Mediterranean.
This Chardonnay is a masterpiece with its vibrant acidity and warm elegance. Enjoy savory and mineral tastes on the palate, achieved by the perfect mix of Chardonnay and various indigenous varietals from Puglia. Yeah, you read that right. It’s Puglia, Italy! Pronounced [poo lee uh] in case you wanted to show off to your friends and tout the heritage. Want to know more? You can find more about San Marzano wines here!
This wine is made up of mostly Chardonnay grapes with a minimal amount of other native white grapes. It’s a delightful, versatile variety. The color of straw yellow, it has hints of goldish reflections that will make you think you’re looking at the sun made liquid. Edda has aromas of mellow flowers, juicy peach and delicate vanilla. It’s generous with its elegance and finish – fresh, delicate and mineral. If you’re not a chardonnay lover, you’re not alone, neither am I. But, trust me, you’ll love this wine!

Grand Vin Bordeaux | Baron Bellevue
This one is the bargain bottle of red wine, coming in at about $8 a bottle at Costco at the time of this publication.
Château Baron Bellevue spans an impressive 21 hectares, which are planted with some of the most popular Bordeaux varieties – 80% Merlot, 15% Cabernet Sauvignon and 5% Cabernet Franc – on a bed of chalky clay gravel.
A whopping 33% of the vines are over 30 years old, with some even planted as far back as 1956. They are grown with utmost and respect for nature, without relying on pesticides. The wine is carefully aged in the chateau’s cellars for 18 months before it’s ready to drink.
Looking for the Best Red Wine for Casual Drinking? Try This Bottle for Under $10
You can enjoy a full-bodied depth of flavor from this ripe and spicy wine. It’s pretty smooth and a good value for under $10 a bottle. Basically, this is an easy glass of wine, and if you’re looking for a low price point, this one is a good buy.
Chateauneuf du Pape Cuvee Sainte Vierge
This ruby red wine is an absolute delight. It’s incredibly complex, delicate and elegant with aromas of red currant, red cherries, leather and tobacco. You might also notice spicy overtones like lavender, thyme and rosemary in your glass. These flavors balance perfectly, with just the right amount of tannins.
The Virgin Mary Might Have Something to Do With the Best Wine to Drink in Chateauneuf du Pape
Cuvée Ste Vierge is a wonderful selection of grapes grown in the Courthezon region with round stones and sandy soils. Fun fact, the name of this exquisite wine is inspired by the Statue of the Virgin Mary in its vineyard! This makes sense given that the Chateauneuf du Pape region started as an enclave kingdom for Popes. Are you a history buff and curious to know more about ancient pope kingdoms? Check out my post on Chateauneuf du Pape here!
Part of the secret to this Chateauneuf du Pape Cuvee Sainte Vierge success may be in its aging process. They leave the wine in a concrete tank for twelve whole months to get the cleanest Grenache expression and let the terroir (read: soil) come through. What amounts is an unspoiled and unadulterated amazing red wine! No need for oak barrels here to get the best of both worlds, new and old.
Where to Find Chateauneuf du Pape Cuvee Sainte Vierge
It is difficult to find this red wine online. I think I picked this bottle up at Dusty’s Cellar for somewhere between $30 and $40. If you are in the area, try looking there. Otherwise, put it on your bottles to remember when you are in the wine store, or, just open Kait’s Cupboard and scroll through the wine cellar page to find a bottle you’ll love!
Rustic and Untamed | Costieres de Nimes 2020
Pierre Vidal’s Costieres de Nimes appellation captures the allure and romance of summer in the South of France perfectly. This wine comes from a small region of the Rhone valley in France at the southernmost edge.
As an aside, if you have not had Rhone wine, you need to. It rarely disappoints, and often is better than more expensive bottles from other places (like most other places around the world). But, back to the region Costieres de Nimes is from…they’ve been making wine since Marc Antony was trying to take over the world with his girl Cleo. Their wines, like that love story, have a rough, rustic, untamed appeal you will love.
An Organic Certification for the Vineyard
Did I mention this vineyard is organically certified? This red wine bled is about 60% Grenache, 20% Syrah, and 20% Mourvèdre. It’s spicy, full of tannins, and earthy. If you’re like me and love an earthy, old world wine, this one is a must try.
Try this wine with my Mediterranean pizza recipe for an absolutely delicious dinner that definitely can stand for a date night in, with friends, or with you because, you are worth it!
Where to Find Costieres de Nimes
You can order this amazing red wine bottle at Wine Awesomeness here for $22 and have it shipped to your house. Or, take a look at your local wine shop. If you live in the Lansing, Michigan area, a good bet is Vine and Brew or Dusty’s!
Le Baron De Malleret a Grand Vin Bordeaux
Château de Malleret’s youthful grapes portray a vivid fruity flavor, making it a must have at your next meal. The subtle but powerful aromas create a unique identity that lingers in the nose, palate and culminates in an amazing finish. The wine has a beautiful tannic structure that is both round and long lasting. This is a reminder of its distinguished and regal heritage.
A Bordeaux Going Organic
Covering 60 hectares, the vineyard at Château de Malleret is nestled in Günzian gravels. It has been in the process of organic conversion since 2020 and boasts a great variety of soils as one of its key natural assets.
This wine is perfect with lamb. And, if you’re looking for a fantastic lamb recipe, post a comment below and I will get back to you with the Easter grilled lamb recipe I posted on Instagram that was entirely devoured!
Where to Find Your Next Favorite Red Wine?
You can find Le Baron De Malleret through Empire Wine which will ship right to your door. Coming in at $19.99 this bottle is a good value that you would probably pay $40 for if it was coming from California.
Sometimes, it is at Whole Foods, and that is where I found it. But, just take a look because they swap wine bottles in and out depending on the time of year. Regardless, this Bordeaux is worth the price, the French might just know a thing or two about wine.
Looking for the Best White Wine to Drink with More Crisp Less Sweet Flavor? Try Inama Vin Soave
Vin Soave is the Inama vineyard’s entry-level wine. It makes up about half of their wine production and is the perfect way to indulge yourself! Inama sommeliers describe Vin Soave as “a little luxury for everyday.” Um, yes please!
High End Taste at a Good Price
This classic, harmonic, and intense wine makes for an ideal high-end taste with a great quality/price ratio. The Inama vineyards are situated in Soave Classico, an area with basaltic-volcanic soil. I’ve written about the benefits of volcanic soil before in my post on Etna Rosso red wine (also a favorite that you should definitely put on the wine list!).
Inama vineyard’s volcanic soil creates a unique blend of minerality and field flower notes in their wine, making them delightful and intriguing. Looking for a food pairing? Try brussel sprout salad for a perfect match that will bring out the lemon flavor in the salad and the crispness of this delicious white wine.
Where to Find Your New Favorite White Wine
You can find Vin Soave at Whole Foods in stock here for $15.99! Just order online and pick up at the store!
